FFL FRIDAY: Song of the Sorrowing Harp (Norwegian Folklore)

 Greetings!

On this FFL Friday, we are exploring a Norwegian folk tale (or a Viking Ghost Tale), Song of the Sorrowing Harp.

The tale tells of a young woman who is drowned by her jealous sister. Some incarnations of the tale include the 17th century murder ballad, The Twa Sisters, and The Bonny Swans (performed by Loreena McKennitt).

Versions of the tale are spread through Scandinavia and the British Isles. At least 21 English variants exist under several names, including "Minnorie" or "Binnorie", "The Cruel Sister", "The Wind and Rain", "Dreadful Wind and Rain", "Two Sisters", "The Bonny Swans" and the "Bonnie Bows of London".

In this FFL Friday, Chuck Owston tells us the tale that many refer to as a Viking Ghost Tale.
