And now, the interview! Yes, editing is a tough job!
TA: First, introduce yourself to our lovely readers.
SS: My name is Scott M. Sandridge. I’m a writer, reviewer, and an editor, so I wear many hats. I’ve had close to thirty short stories published in various anthologies and magazines and was the managing editor for Fear & Trembling Magazine for four years. I currently edited three anthologies for Seventh Star Press, one being Hero’s Best Friend: An Anthology of Animal Companions. I also edit freelance.
TA: Tell us a little of your work process. Do you have any "rituals" or do you just dive right in?
SS: It depends on the work and the time available to me. I write whenever I get the chance to. Lately I’ve discovered that my writing flows better if I write after an hour or two of playing video games, especially story-based RPG type of games. But I only have time for that on the weekends. During the weekdays, I have to just force myself to trudge through.
TA: As an editor, what sort of criteria must a writer/author pass if you are to edit their work?
SS: Follow the guidelines! They’re there for a reason. I also prefer standard manuscript formatting (Courier or Roman, 10 or 12 pt font, double-line spaced). While I’m okay with minor variances, don’t let it be to where I have to spend as much time or more to reformat as I would to edit it. If you say you have a 90-page manuscript, and it’s single-line spaced instead of double, I’m going to be like, “Hey, this isn’t a 90 page manuscript, it’s a 180 page manuscript.” I’m old-fashioned that way. And I’m just as old-fashioned when it comes to determining word count.
TA: What are some challenges you face in your profession?
SS: Editing can be a long, tedious job. So you have to have the patience to do it. You also need to know how to talk to authors and be diplomatic with your suggestions. Sure, authors are expected to have a thick skin in this profession, but in reality most of us really don’t. We can get mopey over some of the silliest things.
TA: Tell us a little about the new project, Hero's Best Friend.
SS: Hero’s Best Friend is an anthology about the animal companions of heroes. Most often they get second-stage (even though they manage to steal the show). I thought it’d be cool to have an anthology of short stories where the animal companions get center stage instead of their human buddies.
TA: What's coming up for you and where can people find you on the interwebs? Plug Away. :)
SS: I recently got a short story (“Deidre’s Folly”) published in the anthology, Re-Vamped: Blood Lust Revenge, by Neophyte Press. Currently it’s ebook only, but if enough ebook copies sell they’ll make a print version.
Seventh Star Press plans to have more anthologies in the near future, so there’ll be more anthology editing for me to do soon. :)
